Sounds like the start of a corny joke, doesn’t it? But it’s not at all funny, this one. Luke 18 9-14. In his commentary Luke actually says that Jesus told this story to some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on others. A Pharisee – character one, the one who was confident of his own righteousness doing and being right, loudly and confidently prayed his flowery prayer and left the temple unwittingly condemned by his own words. A tax collector – character two, the one who was looked down upon, with quiet and faltering voice and a downcast face, talked to God about God. He was a sinner. God had mercy. He walked out forgiven. Need to impress? Go to church. Need forgiveness? Go to God. And go to church. He goes there too.
